Navigating Towards Sustainable Harbours

This report examines how collaboration and knowledge sharing can pave the way for sustainable energy solutions in ports, placing a strong emphasis on reducing emissions through forward-thinking port policies.

It is created to help Dutch maritime companies, sector organisations, and public authorities tap into new opportunities and form strategic partnerships within Sweden’s progressive maritime industry.

The report features comprehensive profiles of major Swedish ports, key maritime policy developments, a stakeholder overview, and practical recommendations for advancing sustainability.

At their current trajectory, Sweden’s ports can lead global sustainability efforts, driving innovation in green technologies and infrastructure development.

The Port of Gothenburg, Sweden’s largest and a leader in sustainability, is recognised globally for its green port development through initiatives like green corridors for alternative fuel vessels. However, several other Swedish ports, such as Stockholm, Gävle, and Trelleborg, are rapidly developing hydrogen production, offering shore power, and electrifying operations.

These efforts highlight a strong commitment to achieving a zero-emission future while sustaining competitiveness in Northern Europe. However, progress faces hurdles, including high costs of renewable energy infrastructure, volatility in alternative fuel markets, and limited collaboration between ports. Defence concerns have stalled the development of offshore wind projects, adding complexity to Sweden’s clean energy ambitions.

Swedish ports operate as semi-private entities under municipal ownership or lease agreements, guided mainly by EU standards and local policies. Their reliance on municipal legislation fosters close relationships with local authorities
